One thing I know about the Spartans is, they don’t have flutes or clarinets because they make almost no sound because of their stadium’s acoustics. They just give the flute and clarinet parts to other brass instruments.
Woodwinds play fast … Woodwinds play fast.
Brass play loud.
If you’re interested in playing “Celebration” loud enough for people within a 3-mile radius can hear you, go brass.
If you are interested in playing 16th notes at 160 bpm, go woodwinds, they won’t sound as dirty.
That being said, most marching bands are more interested in being loud and dark than technical and reedy, so generally brass is more important than woodwinds.

But didn’t they win the Sudler Trophy 3 years before yall. How many super Bowls? Man if i was to write all the things they have accomplish I would need 10 more comments so please that that MSU being the best band shit.
Woodwind(Picclo, … Woodwind(Picclo,Flutes,Clarinets) help balance out the sound in my OPINION and in some songs make a nice feature, they also as the dynamic sound. They are beautiful sound insturments and if use ring can be very powerful and stand out to an music ear.
For a concert band, … For a concert band, woodwinds are just as important. But most woodwind instruments aren’t loud enough to be much use in a marching band. People debate this a lot, but it is my general opinion that woodwinds, except for saxes, don’t belong in marching bands. Keep in mind that OPINION is the operative word here. While I say none can compare to the Spartans, you may say the same of another band. We aren’t exactly unbiased parties. However, it is grossly unfair to say the Spartans are like garbage.
They’re the band … They’re the band for Michigan State University. They’re pretty well known in that region of the US, but they probably aren’t anywhere else.

Some say it’s for … Some say it’s for the presidents, but for years they only had 8 and on rare occasion 9….but in all reality, the band is just that big, you need alot of manpower to help coordinate 400+ people.
